We’ve been family owned and operated for more than 48 years. We like to think of ourselves as an integral part of the Austin music community and our store as the place where customers become friends.
Company History
The Proud History of the Strait Music Company
In 1963, Dan Strait moved his family to Austin, TX from Houston to open a Baldwin piano franchise. He had been working at a Baldwin franchise in Houston for years, and when an opportunity opened in Austin, he pounced on it.
The company was called Strait Piano and Organ. His motto was “Where customers become friends.”
Slowly, Dan saw the opportunity to expand to a full-line music store, and in 1967 Strait Piano and Organ incorporated and became Strait Music Company. A reputation for good products, good service, and good prices led to a steady growth in business.
After surviving the Memorial Day flood of 1981, which nearly “sank” the business and all of its inventory, Dan decided it was time to turn to his son Robert to manage the store, which he still does today.
All of Dan Strait’s other children have been actively involved throughout time including his daughters Nancy & Danna, and David Strait, who still manages the piano department at the south store today.
It’s been a wild 48 years. One move from Lamar to 5th Street, another move from 5th Street to our current location at Ben white and South Lamar along with an expansion to a second store in north Austin at Hwy 183 & Hwy 620.
We are consistently ranked in the top 10% of all music retailers nationwide. We are very proud of our history and we still run on the same principles that Dan Strait set forward in the early 1960’s. We are still very much a family-run outfit with David, Robert, and now the first 3rd generation Strait, Clinton, all working daily at the south location.
