GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Perform highly advanced training for the Training Operations division. Work involves planning, researching, developing, organizing, instructing, and evaluating all aspects of the health, wellness, and strength and conditioning training programs. Work under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Oversee and coordinate fitness and wellness programs, services, and activities; and monitor programs to ensure effectiveness.
2. Evaluate and analyze training needs in support of the program.
3. Plan and direct training to support the program.
4. Research, design, implement, schedule, and conduct training via lecture setting on health and wellness topics as well as instruct exercise classes.
5. Oversee, develop, and implement curricula, course outlines, instructional methods, training aids and methods, manuals, and other support material including but not limited to weight management, stress reduction, health risk management.
6. Maintain accurate and timely records on participants to support agency responsibilities and requirements.
7. Participate in solving training issues and ensure the effective utilization of modern training methods and techniques to support the program; and is an active participant in the program and trains by example.
8. Translate the latest scientific evidence into practical application in support of the fitness and wellness training program.
9. Formulate policies and procedures for fitness and wellness programs.
10. Develop long range training goals for the program.
11. Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
12. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:
Education – Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree preferably in physical education, kinesiology, exercise science, athletic training, nutrition or a related degree.
Experience – Four (4) years or more experience in administering or instructing health, wellness, and/or strength and conditioning training programs in a training academy or fitness facility preferred.
Licensure and/or Certification – Certification(s) from any of the following: National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Personal Trainer; American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Health Fitness Instructor; American Council on Exercise Personal Trainer; National Academy of Sports Medicine Personal Trainer; Cooper Institute Law Enforcement Fitness Specialist; FLETC Law Enforcement Fitness Coordinator; American Aerobic Association International - International Sports Medicine Association (AAAI-ISMA); Health and Fitness Professionals Association (HFPA); Institute for Sports & Fitness Development (ISFD); International Association of Resistance Trainers (IART); International Sports & Fitness Trainers Association, Inc. (ISFTA); National Association of Body Fitness (NABF); National College of Exercise Professionals (NCEP); National Exercise Trainer Association (NETA); National Strength Professionals Association (NSPA); Academy of Applied Personal Training Education (AAPTE); Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA); International Council for Certified Personal Trainers (ICCPT); International Personal Trainer Academy (IPTA); International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA); International Strength Training Association (ISTA); National Aerobics & Fitness Trainers Association (NAFTA); National Association for Fitness Certification (NAFC); National Council for Certified Personal Trainers (NCCPT); National Endurance and Sports Trainers Association (NESTA); World Instructor Training Schools (WITS) or must obtain certification within one hundred and eighty (180) days of employment. Current CPR and AED certifications or must to obtain them within ninety (90) days of employment. Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Instructor certificate/license preferred. Must maintain and have a current Physical Readiness Score of 90%. Valid driver license from state of residence.
Regulatory Knowledge – Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures. Design programs or training. Manage large groups of participants, both commissioned and non-commissioned. Knowledge of current exercise and nutrition terminology, technology, and techniques. Proven ability to design and implement training programs to support agency objectives and expectations.

Analytical Reasoning/Attention to Detail – Must demonstrate an ability to examine data/information, discern variations/similarities, and be able identify trends, relationships and causal factors, as well as grasp issues, draw accurate conclusions, and solve problems.
Technology (computers/hardware/software/operating systems) – Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), and appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems and be able to learn new software/systems. Knowledge of computer and empirical research methods and sources to obtain meaningful primary and secondary data regarding fitness and wellness.
Confidentiality and Protected Information – Must demonstrate an ability to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations, and adhere to applicable laws/statutes/policies related to access, maintenance and dissemination of information.
Safety – Must be able to work in safe manner at all times, avoiding shortcuts that have potential adverse results/risks, and must be able to comply with safety standards and best practices.
Travel and/or Schedule – Position will be required to frequently travel locally and may be required to travel statewide or nationwide including overnight.

A DPS employee who is selected for a position in the same salary group and state title as their current position will be transferred with no salary change.
A DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group with a new state title may receive an increase of no more than 3.4% over their current salary regardless of posted salary.
Salary is contingent upon qualifications and is subject to salary administration and budgetary restrictions.
